Originally for voice and piano, Linden Lea was first published in a magazine ‘The Vocalist’, April 1902. Ralph Vaughan Williams was twenty-nine years of age at the time. He continued to contribute several articles and songs to the early editions of ‘The Vocalist’. Linden Lea was certainly not the first song he had written: there are several songs surviving in manuscript, or published later that pre-date what was to become RVW’s best-selling song. During his lifetime, Williams worked to preserve various English folk songs that were forgotten during the 19th and 20th centuries. Linden Lea is based on a poem by William Barnes (1801-1886), written in the English of Dorset, England. The poem describes an orchard in the countryside of England that the author is remembering fondly. The original score calls for an unspecified voice and piano. Since the original performance, Linden Lea has been arranged for many different kinds of ensembles.
This arrangement by Len Rhodes, a ‘work for hire’ for SATB and Piano, dates from 2012.
